AI Didn't Just Save Time. It Transformed the Game.

At Dell, a quarterly planning process that once took 2 people working 80+ hours a week is now run by 1 person in a regular 8 to 5. Same 90%+ accuracy. 75% fewer human hours. Billions of dollars in impact.

The story

People keep telling me AI is just a toy that writes emails and summarizes documents, nothing really useful. Well, that's up to you. Let me tell you a story.

When I came at Dell, 2 people at 80 hours a week gave us 90%+ accuracy on our quarterly forecasting effort. I was able to reduce headcount by half and human hours by 75%, accuracy stayed steadily at 90%+. Deadlines were still met, depth of analysis was still there. The only thing that wasn't there anymore was the unnecessary grunt work: the moving data from one place to another, the unconnected pivot tables, the manual formatting of emails and slides.

What changed

When I was done, I moved from heavy Sunday work pulling, formatting and moving data from one place to another, to one streamlined process:

How I got there

I started by understanding the process, figuring out the pain points, identifying what kind of work was repetitive or didn't really need to be done. AI helped me understand, create macros to avoid manual labor, but most importantly acted as a brainstorming partner helping me test out ideas before implementing them.

But where AI really came into place was when I was able to fully take me out of the process. Since I didn't have access to agents, I had to do the copying and pasting, debugging, installing tools and running the programs. But AI was the brain behind it all. I was able to create a machine learning model that used 7 forecasting models, combining historical and pipeline data, without losing accuracy but even more important, with no human in the loop.

The result

By the time I embraced AI, accuracy remained at 90%+, but now a Python model was running everything. It cleaned the data, it analyzed patterns, it adjusted for outliers. And predicted with the same accuracy that took 2 full-time employees working overtime daily for weeks.

And since AI never touched the data, it was all safe with no leakage risk. The models ran entirely within Dell's approved environment, with no external data exposure.

Oh, but you did this for a small business

No. This was Dell's server business. Billions of dollars a quarter, with accuracy of 90%+ 4 weeks before the next quarter even started, giving leadership, sales, marketing, and everyone involved a clear time advantage to go out and attack the problems I identified.

The biggest value

The biggest value wasn't AI doing my job. It was AI eliminating work that never should have required a human in the first place.
